Principal’s Update – Term 3, Week 5

Seaview High School Community,

At the conclusion of Term 2 and as we launch into Term 3, I would like to extend my gratitude to our school community for their dedication and support. Last term was filled with significant achievements and memorable events that have enriched our school environment. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our school community.

As we embark on Term 3 and Semester 2, Year 7 – 11 students will be starting new subjects – an exciting opportunity to explore new areas of interest and continue to build on your skills and knowledge. For our Year 12 students, subjects are building up towards the end of the year. This is a crucial time for our seniors as they focus on their goals and prepare for the next steps in their journey.

Recently, we celebrated the achievements of our senior students at an assembly for Year 10, 11 and 12, presenting awards in a range of categories:

  • Academic Excellence: Recognising students who have achieved outstanding academic results
  • Community Achievement Award: Honouring students who have made significant contributions to our community
  • VET Achievement: Celebrating success in Vocational Education and Training and School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships
  • Arts and Media: Acknowledging creativity and innovation in the arts and media.
  • All Rounders: Recognising students who excel across multiple areas.

Congratulations to all award recipients. Your dedication and hard work inspire us all.

I also take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the many adults that support our senior school students – they say ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ so thank you to your teachers, support staff, families and broader community for being part of our village.

Student Free Day

Term 3 student free day served as a bridge between the familiarisation and testing phases of the South Australian Curriculum undertaken by staff in 2024, and the engagement phase now underway in 2025. Leigh Charlesworth (Director of Teaching and Learning) and Chloe Vella (HASS Coordinator) presented the ‘why’ of the SA Curriculum, highlighting how dispositional teaching can advance both the Department for Education strategy for public education and the Seaview High School Site Learning Plan. Learning area coordinators and teacher leaders then led two targeted sessions.

In these sessions, staff developed learning area specific context statements, identifying student behaviours that signal dispositional development, to embed opportunities for students to strengthen a chosen disposition.

Ancillary staff took a small break from their usual agenda to engage in a reflective and creative painting session. The aim was to encourage team members to paint something that either inspired them or represented a goal or aspiration they’re working towards – something that will help motivate and carry them through the rest of the year. This session was not only a chance to tap into creativity, but also a meaningful opportunity for personal reflection and team connection. Each painting tells a unique story, offering insight into what drives us individually and collectively.

Principal’s Tours

In response to families unable to attend Open Night, we organised small group tours in Week 2, contacting families directly. These tours offered a glimpse into our vibrant learning spaces and classrooms. It was a pleasure to witness the positive learning and teaching experiences, with our school values prominently displayed. I look forward to continuing to showcase our school in this format.

2026 Year 7 Allocation and Transition

Enrolment offers for Year 6 students commencing Year 7 in 2026 were sent to families on August 6. We are trialling a new process this year involving direct communication with families, which has been received very positively. At this stage, we anticipate approximately 250 enrolments. Due to high demand, a waitlist has already commenced and continues to grow daily. The majority of enrolments are from in-zone families, with additional strong interest through our specialist programs and out-of-zone applications.

Career Expo

We welcomed over 50 organisations to our Career Expo on Tuesday 29 July. The event showcased a diverse range of industries including film, game development, 3D animation, early childhood education, nursing, landscape architecture, beauty, cyber security, STEM, aviation, defence, sport, finance, theology, optometry, agriculture, global shipping, student travel, and disability services. It was a valuable opportunity for students to explore future pathways and connect with industry professionals.

Year 7/8 Boys Soccer

Well done to our Year 7/8 Boys Statewide Knockout Soccer team, who kicked off their campaign with a dominant 6–0 victory over Woodcroft College in Round 1.

Girls Netball

Towards the end of last term, our Year 7/8 netball team played two incredibly close games, narrowly losing the first 22–23 and drawing the second 35–35. It was fantastic to see such a high level of skill and gameplay, with all three teams evenly matched throughout. The girls showed tremendous determination and fought hard until the final whistle. Although they miss progressing to the next round by just one goal, they should be proud of their grit, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Our Year 11/12 team faced a talented Loreto side in a hard-fought match. Despite the challenge, the girls gave a strong performance and showed great determination right up to the final whistle. Making it through to this stage is a fantastic achievement, and the team should be proud of their efforts.

CE Visit

Chief Executive of the Department for Education, Professor Martin Westwell, visited us on Tuesday 24 June, where he was warmly welcomed by staff and students. During his visit, Martin observed a calm and positive school culture, noting the way both adults and students engage as a school community. The visit began with a discussion in the principal’s office focused on the activation of the department’s strategy at the site level. We then attended the Breakfast Club, followed by a tour of classrooms and specialist areas.

Throughout the visit, Professor Westwell engaged with students and staff, asking questions about their learning experiences and the school’s strategic direction.

2025 NAPLAN

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports were sent home with students during Week 3 through their Care Group teachers. Individual Student Reports allow parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national literacy and numeracy proficiency standards. Seaview High School results continue to reflect our positive school and learning culture. Our School Mean Scores for all components of the NAPLAN (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, Numeracy), for both Year 7 and 9 are at the ‘Strong’ Proficiency Standard.

It’s important to remember that the NAPLAN is just one measure of student achievement, at a certain point in time, and we use a range of other data sources in communicating with families about student achievement and growth. If families have any questions regarding their child’s individual report, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to support you and your child’s educational journey.

Bunnings Fundraiser

Our HASS team, with the support of teachers, students, and parents, rolled up their sleeves and cooked up a storm at Bunnings recently, raising funds for the upcoming Year 11 History trip. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed on the day. It was such a success that we sold out and had to restock supplies throughout the day!

Louise Miller-Frost MP Visit

It was a pleasure to welcome the Member for Boothby, Louise Miller-Frost MP to our school recently. During her visit, she presented us with new flags, toured our facilities, and viewed the site of our upcoming oval upgrade and pavilion project.

VET Enrolment Interviews

With more than 135 interview timeslots booked over the 2 nights, we had around 98% attendance. Currently we have over 100 students looking at booking into VET courses for 2026. The cohort who attended were from year 9 – 11. Many Year 9 students discussed doing work experience and are looking at Gateway/introductory courses to help prepare students for VET in year 11. Most Year 10 students had gathered information from our Career Expo and came well prepared to discuss VET course and Registered Training Organisation (RTO) options.

Year 11s came to speak about School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, and Certificate III/Advanced courses to move them into their chosen industry.

It has been extremely beneficial to follow the Career Expo and capture students’ pathways and assisting them with courses to support their learning and goals.

Parent Engagement Survey

The Department for Education coordinates an annual survey to better understand the things we’re doing well, where we can improve, and what’s important to our families. Parents and carers should have received an email or SMS from the Department for Education Parent Survey Team with a unique link to participate in the survey. I encourage you to complete the survey, which takes less than 10 minutes. The survey is now open and closes midnight Sunday 7 September 2025. Your feedback will be used locally in our school improvement planning and more broadly to inform other key initiatives to improve education in South Australia. Your answers will not identify you or your child. Only collated feedback will be provided to our school.

Year 10 Work Experience

In Week 10 of Term 2, our Year 10 students took part in in work experience across a range of industries including horticulture, hair and beauty, automotive, physiotherapy, hospitality, health, animal care, and many more. This was a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, explore career pathways, and make industry connections – with some gaining employment from it.

DAYMAP App

Daymap have launched a new and improved app – Daymap Companion. It’s more user-friendly and offers a range of new features, including allowing parents to manage all their children in one place, even across different schools. Further information has been distributed directly to families and can be found on our website here. For additional information, all parents are encouraged to watch our video.

Artsaganza

After months of dedication and preparation, our students took to the stage for this year’s Artsaganza. Their matinee performance wowed a packed audience of primary school students, while the evening show delighted another sell-out crowd. A huge congratulations to everyone involved – it was inspiring to see the creativity and talent of our Arts come together in such a vibrant performance. (Professional photos to come).

Dance Ultra Competition

In week 3, many students in our Special Interest Dance Program represented Seaview at the Dance Ultra competition. We competed with the grace, poise and positive attitude that our dancers are known for and came away with two 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings, one Honourable Mention, and perhaps the most exciting trophy of the day – the School Spirit Award! Congratulations to all students involved and to our dance teachers, Alice and Laura, for their support.
